Slugline 2 is beautiful and clean- even cleaner than Highland. When writing a screenplay, the auto formatting is really the only reason why you write in a specific screenwriting app. And yet I find myself back to Slugline with their release of version 2. I bought Highland 2 for the dark mode and typewriter function, which was a feature request I made on Slugline 1. I wrote a feature film in the original Slugline, and it really delivered on the goal, which was to keep you typing, and stop you fiddling (or procrastinating, which is what I'm doing right now.) I've written in many different writing apps, and this one is by far my favorite. Both of those apps have great screenwriting modes and are far more stable and capable, plus they can be used in a simplified distraction-free mode. If you look at the functionality you're getting versus what a license for, say, Scrivener or Fade In costs, you'd be crazy to throw money at Slugline 2. Otherwise, the inability to change even the (awful) default font for headers and such is a bizarre restriction, but I suppose it's that kind of arbitrary limitation that lets the developers brand the app as comparatively simple or focused or whatever. Drag-and-drop outlining seems less buggy than the equivalent feature in Highland 2, but that's not saying much. The timeline view, while unattractive, is arguably kind of useful, but it's certainly not essential. It's now one of so many apps that promise to be minimal and distraction-free yet keep adding features that the developer has deemed necessary. They haven't regained my trust, at least.īeyond that, this a real dog's breakfast of an app at this point. Asking customers to pay for a new version now is a bridge too far. The developers didn't take a responsible and professional attitude towards fixing those issues. Slugline 1.0 had stability issues on macOS, but on iOS it was downright dangerous to use, as it would – and did – corrupt files and ruin your work. Slugline 2 is an all-new app that replaces the original Slugline for Mac. You can sync your writing via iCloud Drive or Dropbox. Slugline 2 is compatible with Slugline for iOS/iPadOS. Slugline plays well with others, but can also be the only screenwriting app you ever need. You can even import and export Final Draft’s FDX files. The writing experience may be unique, but the screenplays you output from Slugline 2 are perfectly ordinary. Live Compare works by comparing the differences between any two documents, so there’s no “track changes” to remember to turn on! With Live Compare, you can keep track of changes from draft to draft, and optionally include industry-standard change marks in your printed/PDF screenplay. The screenplays you create with Slugline 2 can be opened on any computer, using any writing app - because they are just text. Slugline 2 is based on Fountain, the plain-text screenplay format that’s free and open for all to use. It’s the 30,000-foot view of your screenplay, and you’ll wonder how you wrote without it. All your outline elements appear there, spaced according to page count. Slugline 2’s Timeline gives you an intuitive view of your story's pacing, or how your structure plays out over time. The associated bits of screenplay come along for the ride, creating a powerful tool for spitballing ideas in an outline, or experimenting with the structure of a 300-page epic. Anything you see in Slugline 2’s Outline Navigator can be moved and re-ordered. Slugline has always been a great place to outline your story, and it’s even more powerful in Slugline 2. This keeps your hands on the keyboard, which keeps you writing. In fact, every single feature of Slugline 2 is driven by the words you type, from the basic elements of a screenplay, to notes, to integrated outlining. With Slugline 2, screenplay formatting happens automatically as you write. Kick the tires at no cost - or, if all you write is short films, never pay a dime! Slugline 2 is a free download, and works without watermarks or limitations until you pass page six, at which point you can upgrade to Unlimited Writing, which includes Final Draft export. It combines an elegant, minimal interface that stays out of your way, with powerful features that help you craft and refine your story. Slugline 2 is a screenwriting app devoted entirely to the writing process.
